Do you know what type of motivation makes you push yourself? There are two types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic. Why do you need to know what type of motivation works for you? Because that’s how you know what to look for when pursuing your goals. If you know what fires you up, then you can fit more of that in your life to give you a boost, set yourself up for success, and to achieve your goals.
Ok, so let’s break down the two different types of motivation:
There are some instances where you could benefit from both types of motivation depending on the type of goal. Using the same weight loss example, you could get fired up by both cheering from your support while also internally cheering yourself to your little goals and feeling propelled by both to take you over that edge and drive toward the next goal. I’m personally most often intrinsically motivated. I appreciated support from friends and family, but that’s not what ultimately pushes me to reach my goals. Since I know this, I make sure to set myself up with lots of cues to trigger that motivation and propel me forward. I enjoy feeling pride and accomplishment about reaching those milestones. So, setting up baby step milestones on the journey to reach my bigger goals, then doing a happy dance when I hit those marks really pushes me forward.
Knowing what motivates you gives you an extra steppingstone to help you achieving your goals. So what type of motivation revs you up? What are some things you do to surround yourself with that type of motivation? Now that you know this, how are you going to set yourself up for success?
